Somalia, July 21 2026 – Somalia's National University plans to establish new innovation, research and human capital development centres to support economic development, the university president said on Monday.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the first class from the university's Institute of Da'wah and Islamic Studies, President Mohamed Mahmoud Mohamed said the university would soon launch an innovation centre to help students and alumni develop business ideas and establish start-ups with support from investment and development partners.
He said the university also planned to open a research centre focused on strengthening Somalia's productive sectors, including agriculture, livestock and fisheries, in line with the federal government's national transformation agenda.
Mohamed added that the university was expanding specialised institutes aimed at developing human capital, including programmes designed to improve the skills of public sector employees and enhance the quality of government services.

The university already operates a number of specialised centres that provide training, research and community services alongside its academic faculties, he said.
Mohamed said the initiatives reflected the university's broader ambition to contribute to national development through education, research, innovation and workforce development.
Re-established by the federal government in 2014 after years of closure caused by conflict, the National University of Somalia has expanded its academic programmes and institutions in recent years as the country seeks to rebuild its higher education system and strengthen human capital.
