Mogadishu, 24 August 2026 — Somalia is accelerating efforts to develop skills and create jobs, with a new national committee holding its first meeting Sunday.
The National Committee for Skills Development and Job Creation includes representatives from 13 ministries and is tasked with improving workforce skills, creating employment and aligning training with labour market needs, the committee said.
In a video statement, it said the policy could equip people with skills to earn a living and increase participation in the economy.
The policy will focus on digital technology, agriculture and livestock, manufacturing and entrepreneurship, with training designed to reflect market needs and technological changes, officials said.

They said Somalia needs a skilled workforce capable of meeting domestic demand, which could reduce reliance on foreign workers and imported services.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed the committee on July 18. It comprises the Prime Minister’s Office and 13 ministries.
Skills development and job creation have long required national coordination, officials said, particularly as young people make up a large share of the population.
The first meeting marks the next step as the government seeks to align training with economic and labour market needs.
