Somalia, 22 April 2026 Somalia has established a maritime academy to upgrade ports and will officially opening it in coming days, Ports Minister said Wednesday.
Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said the inauguration plans for the academy are being finalized by the ministry and other relevant authorities.
“We have established and equipped it, and in the coming days it will be officially inaugurated,” he said.
The minister said the maritime and ports sector requires advanced technical expertise, as Somalia moves to modernise infrastructure and improve governance of its coastline.

The announcement came as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud inaugurated a new headquarters for the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport in Mogadishu, according to a statement from the presidency.
The government says it is prioritising port development and maritime security to boost economic growth and strengthen trade.
Somalia, which has one of Africa’s longest coastlines, is seeking to expand its maritime sector and improve management of its marine resources.
