Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The Somali Police Force on Friday announced a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of individuals responsible for recent mortar attacks across several districts of Mogadishu, including areas near the international airport and the presidential compound, Villa Somalia.

Banadir Regional Police Commissioner, Colonel Moalim Mahdi, made the announcement during a press conference on June 6, 2025, which marked the first day of Eid al-Adha. The initiative comes amid renewed concerns over a resurgence in attacks, nearly 15 years after al-Shabaab was officially driven out of the capital.

Anyone who provides credible information about individuals launching mortars during the late-night hours will receive a reward of $30,000,” Colonel Mahdi stated. He noted that the most dangerous period for such attacks is between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM, when extremist groups frequently exploit darkness to carry out operations.

The renewed shelling underscores the fragile security environment in Mogadishu and the enduring threat posed by al-Shabaab, despite sustained counterterrorism efforts by Somali security forces, supported by international partners.

Colonel Mahdi urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity, particularly in areas previously targeted. He emphasized that tips can be shared anonymously via police and national intelligence hotlines.

Public cooperation is critical to preventing further attacks. We rely on citizens to be our eyes and ears,” he said.

The reward initiative is part of a broader campaign aimed at enhancing community involvement in security operations, as Somalia continues to navigate complex challenges in its quest for lasting peace and stability.
