Somalia, 12 June 2026 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said the federal government requested a delay in announcing the timetable for national elections in order to maintain opportunities for political dialogue.
Speaking during Miizaan Podcast, of Dawan Media, the president said the country’s electoral commission remains responsible for setting election schedules and timelines.
However, he revealed that the federal government asked the commission to postpone announcing the timetable for federal-level elections.
According to Hassan Sheikh, the decision was intended to keep negotiations with opposition leaders alive while discussions on the country’s political future continue.
He noted that opposition leaders remain primarily focused on issues related to national elections and the broader electoral framework.
