MOGADISHU, Somalia – July 22, 2026 – The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly condemned threats by Yemen’s Houthi group against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including warnings to target vessels using Saudi ports and plans to impose a maritime blockade.
In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the government rejects any actions undermining maritime security, freedom of navigation, and the safety of international trade.
The Houthis warned shipping companies that vessels carrying goods to, from, or via Saudi ports could be treated as potential targets, describing their plan as a “maritime blockade.” They also threatened a broad military response to any action by Saudi Arabia.

Tensions escalated after the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of attacking Sana’a International Airport. In response, the Houthis launched ballistic missiles and drones targeting Abha International Airport, though the Saudi-led coalition intercepted the weapons.
Somalia emphasized the strategic importance of the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait for global trade, warning that blockades or attacks in these waterways could disrupt fuel and goods transportation, impacting regional and international economies.
The Somali government reiterated its commitment to supporting regional stability and called on all parties to respect international law and ensure the safety of maritime commerce.
