MOGADISHU, 24 October 2026 Somalia’s government on Saturday condemned what it called a terrorist attack on a church in Jordan’s Karak governorate, saying the assault killed and wounded civilians who were peacefully gathered there, according to a statement from the foreign ministry.
“Places where communities gather must be respected and protected,” the ministry said.
Somalia said it opposes violence and extremism in all forms and stands with the government and people of Jordan. It sent condolences to the families of those killed and wished the wounded a speedy recovery. It called for all those responsible for the attack to be brought to justice, the ministry said.
This comes after gunmen opened fire at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud in Karak governorate on Friday during a funeral, killing at least seven people and wounding 34, according to Al Jazeera, citing Jordanian officials. No group had claimed responsibility, it said.
Jordan’s interior minister, Mazen al-Faraya, called the attack “terrorist” and “unprecedented” without naming a group, and security forces were searching for two suspects. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the attack.
