Somalia, July 23 2026 – Somalia's cabinet has approved four nominees to the Supreme Judicial Council, a constitutional body tasked with safeguarding the independence and administration of the judiciary, the Office of the Prime Minister said on Thursday.
The nominations, proposed by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, include two senior lawyers and two legal experts, each of whom will serve a five-year term once the approval process is completed, according to a cabinet statement.
Established under Article 145 of Somalia's 2026 Constitution, the Supreme Judicial Council brings together senior judicial officials and appointed legal professionals. Its ex officio members include the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Attorney General, the presidents of the appellate courts of the federal member states and the Banadir Regional Administration, and the chairperson of the Independent Human Rights Commission.

The four nominees approved by the cabinet are the council's appointed members, while the remaining members serve by virtue of holding their respective offices, the statement said.
The Office of the Prime Minister did not provide a timetable for completing the approval process for the judicial council nominees.
