Egypt, 21 May 2026 Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud voiced concern over Israeli involvement in the Horn of Africa and Somaliland’s reported plans to open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, in a phone call.
According to the Arab League, the two leaders discussed recent political and regional developments and stressed the importance of preserving Somalia’s unity and supporting stability in the Horn of Africa.
Gheit also reaffirmed the Arab League’s support for Somalia, including efforts by the federal government to advance political dialogue, national unity and stability, according to the statement.

The two leaders described Somaliland's move as illegitimate and harmful to the sentiments of millions of people across the Arab and Islamic worlds.
The call came amid growing regional reactions to reports that Somaliland intends to open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem and Israel plans to establish a diplomatic office in Hargeisa.
