Istanbul (Dawan Africa) – Somalia and Turkey held discussions on Friday to strengthen cooperation in the maritime transport sector during the 2025 International Transport Forum (ITF) in Istanbul. Somali Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, and Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, focused on enhancing bilateral ties, specifically in port development and maritime logistics.
Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur shared on his official Facebook page:“Today in Istanbul, I had a productive meeting with H.E. Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Türkiye. We discussed the deepening of Somalia-Turkey cooperation, particularly in the fields of ports and maritime transport. I am grateful for the warm welcome and the positive outlook for our collaboration.”
The Somali delegation's participation in the ITF summit underscores the growing role of Turkey in Somalia’s transport sector, particularly in managing critical infrastructure. Turkish companies are currently managing Mogadishu’s main port and Aden Adde International Airport, which have significantly enhanced Somalia's connectivity and trade capacity.
Turkey’s involvement in Somalia’s infrastructure development has paved the way for increased bilateral trade and logistical improvements. The Turkish government continues to offer expertise and investment in key sectors, reinforcing both nations' commitment to fostering regional connectivity and improving global transport efficiency.
The discussions at the summit are part of broader efforts to expand trade links, modernize maritime transport, and enhance the region's role in global supply chains. Minister Nur noted that these talks are crucial to shaping the future of Somalia's expanding maritime and transport sectors, which are vital to the country’s economic growth and integration into the global market.
The 2025 ITF, which brings together over 150 countries, continues to provide a platform for global transport ministers and industry leaders to discuss the future of international logistics, transport infrastructure, and digital solutions to overcome global challenges.
