Dares Salaam, Tanzania (Dawan Africa) – The governments of Somalia and Tanzania have reached an agreement to resume direct flights between Mogadishu and Dar es Salaam, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations and improve regional connectivity.
The agreement followed a high-level technical meeting held on July 1, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, where aviation experts from both countries gathered. The meeting concluded with a joint communiqué outlining plans to relaunch air services between the two capitals in the coming weeks.
According to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the resumption of these direct flights is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and strategic cooperation between the two East African nations.
During Somalia’s 65th Independence Day celebrations held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to working closely with Somalia, particularly in aviation, commerce, and people-to-people relations.
Ambassador Kombo also highlighted that both countries have agreed to renew the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) that was originally signed in 1975. This renewal signals a renewed effort to revitalize aviation cooperation between the two countries.
"Tanzania is ready to closely collaborate with Somalia across various sectors, including aviation," said Ambassador Kombo during the celebration.
It is important to note that in December 2024, Somalia and Tanzania signed a series of bilateral agreements in Mogadishu, covering areas such as defense, tourism, health, aviation, and diplomacy. These agreements have contributed to the strengthening of ties between the two nations
