JIGJIGA, Ethiopia, 29 September 2026 The Somali Regional State's Culture and Tourism Bureau has launched a five-day training programme to develop a framework for safeguarding the cultural heritage of communities in the region, the bureau said on Monday.
The training is being held at the Hoy-jiifta Duule conference venue and was jointly organised by the Culture and Tourism Bureau, DT Global and UNESCO.
The programme aims to strengthen knowledge and understanding of the protection and development of cultural heritage, with a focus on establishing a unified system for identifying, documenting and safeguarding the community's culture and traditions.
The proposed framework will cover indigenous knowledge, arts, crafts and traditional skills passed down through generations, the bureau said.

The training also provides participants with an opportunity to share experience, knowledge and recommendations on challenges facing cultural heritage preservation and ways to strengthen the role of communities in safeguarding their heritage.
The training was officially opened by Abdi Omar Muhummed, deputy head of the Somali Regional State's Culture and Tourism Bureau, who highlighted the importance of protecting and developing cultural heritage as part of the community's identity and history.
The bureau said the work to develop the framework was intended to strengthen the participation of communities, government institutions and other stakeholders involved in culture and heritage.
