Ethiopia, 25 January 2026 Authorities in Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State have launched two major irrigation canal projects in Godey and Adadle districts , aiming to reduce reliance on expensive fuel-powered pumps and bolster the region's wheat production.
The projects, consisting of two 4.3-kilometer canals, were inaugurated on Saturday by the Regional Agriculture Bureau Head, Abdullahi Mohamed Muse, alongside Shabelle Zone Governor Abdi Farah and other senior officials.

The new infrastructure is designed to provide gravity-fed irrigation for approximately 278 hectares of farmland. Once completed, the canals are expected to benefit roughly 1,112 farming households in the arid Shabelle River basin.
The construction is being implemented under the Climate Resilient Wheat Value Chain Development (CREW) project, an initiative supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
