JIGJIGA, September 27, 2026 Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State on Saturday launched a project to develop 1,000 hectares of farmland in the Sitti zone at a cost of nearly one billion birr, equivalent to approximately $6.2 million.
The project aims to increase agricultural production and encourage local communities to participate in harnessing the region’s natural resources and strengthening its economy.
The launch ceremony was attended by Somali Regional State Deputy President Ibrahim Osman Farah, Head of the President’s Office Hussein Hashi Qasim, representatives of the company implementing the project, businesspeople and other officials.
The deputy president said local communities should play an active role in the region’s production, calling for increased investment and greater use of available agricultural opportunities.

The administration has not disclosed how long the project will take, which crops will be cultivated or how many jobs it is expected to create.
