Somalia, 25 September 2025 – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday accused opposition leaders of attempting a coup against the government, alleging they were behind an attack on the Warta Nabadda Police Station in Mogadishu.
Barre said in a video message released by his office, a faction of the Salvation Forum carried out a “lawless attack” on Wednesday targeting police forces. He described it as an attempt to undermine the capital’s stability and derail the country’s one-person-one-vote electoral plan.
“The group calling itself the Salvation Forum clearly attempted yesterday, September 24, 2025, to overthrow the law and the state,” Prime Minister Hamza said.
“It is unfortunate that former leaders who once governed this nation, and recently yearned for power again, have today resorted to such acts,” he added.
The Prime Minister stressed that Somali citizens have the right to peacefully express their views, but warned that instigating violence or attacking state institutions is unacceptable.
He argued that the Wednesday’s incident carried several messages: an attempt to disrupt the upcoming elections, drag Mogadishu back into chaos, and undermine recent gains in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
He praised the security forces and residents of Wardhiigley, saying they had cooperated to repel the attack.
Prime Minister Barre vowed that anyone involved in the incident would be brought to justice, and reiterated his government’s commitment to holding one-person-one-vote elections and sustaining the campaign against Al-Shabaab.
