Mogadishu, 24 August 2026 — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday pledged free university education to the 10 highest-ranking students in Somalia’s Grade 12 national examinations.
The president met the students in Mogadishu to congratulate them, praising their hard work, according to Villa Somalia.
Students among the top 10 who want to continue university in Somalia will be given the opportunity to study for free, he said.
The measure is intended to encourage high-achieving students and support a new generation of Somali professionals, he said.

Hassan Sheikh also encouraged the students to overcome financial and other challenges that could prevent them from continuing education.
The government is planning to establish a public university focused on technology and modern sciences, he said, to provide opportunities for young people interested in technology and related fields.
He thanked parents of the top-performing students for their support.
