MOGADISHU, 4 November 2026 President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met three traditional leaders from Somaliland at the presidential palace in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
The leaders are Boqor Ibrahim Boqor Ali Hussein, Sultan Mohamud Ahmed and Sultan Omar Osman Goodir, who had been visiting Mogadishu in recent days, according to Somali National Television.
The meeting focused on the role of traditional leadership in strengthening relations among Somali communities, promoting mutual understanding and encouraging unity across regions.
Mohamud said traditional leaders play an important role in preserving peace and social cohesion, stressing the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and longstanding ties between Somali communities.
He urged the elders to continue supporting peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts to strengthen trust and relations among Somali people.
The meeting comes amid longstanding disagreements between the federal government and Somaliland over territorial unity. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but the federal government regards it as part of Somalia.
