Somalia, 20 April 2026 — Somali police dismantled an Al-Shabaab extortion network in Lower Shabelle, killing one militant and wounding two others.
The Saturday morning operation conducted by the police counter-terrorism unit and the Criminal Investigation Department officers in Jambaluul, destroyed a checkpoint used to collect money from travellers, police said Sunday.
One militant identified as Zakariye was killed during the operation, while two others were wounded, police said in a statement.

The team also recovered documents linked to the extortion network, as well as weapons and a motorcycle.
Police said the operation forms part of broader efforts to disrupt Al-Shabaab’s financing networks and improve security along transport routes in southern Somalia.
