Somalia, 25 September 2025 – The Somali Police Force has described Wednesday’s shootout at the Warta Nabadda District Police Station in Mogadishu as an armed attack that led to the escape of detainees held on serious charges, injuries to officers, and damage to property.
In a statement issued late Wednesday, police said the incident was carried out by “armed militias accompanied by former politicians.”
However, the statement did not specify the number of prisoners who escaped or provide full details of the casualties.
“The attack resulted in the escape of prisoners facing serious charges, injuries to officers guarding the station, and destruction of vehicles and other property,” the police statement said.
The police expressed condolences to the families affected by the incident but did not clarify the number of deaths. They also warned politicians against deploying armed convoys and military-grade vehicles in the capital, stressing that security institutions would take legal action against anyone violating the order.
Authorities further noted that investigations were ongoing and findings would be handed over to relevant institutions for further action.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Salvation Forum blamed the government for the incident, claiming it was an assault carried out by security forces loyal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and led by Banadir Police Commissioner Mahdi Omar Muumin.
According to the opposition, at least one person was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
The number of fatalities at the incident remains unclear. The clashes have further escalated political tensions in Mogadishu, with the public increasingly concerned about the city’s fragile security situation.
