Mogadishu, September 19, 2025 – Dawan Africa – Somalia’s Federal Parliament has postponed the opening of its 7th session, originally scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2025, moving it to September 29, 2025.
In a circular distributed to lawmakers on Friday, the Office of the Secretary General of the House of the People confirmed the change, citing a formal request from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
“Honorable Members, the opening of the 7th Session of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, which was scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, September 20, 2025, has been postponed to September 29, 2025, at the request of the President,” the notice read.
By parliamentary procedure, the President is responsible for inaugurating each new session of the legislature. The delay was linked to President Mohamud’s official participation in the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), which is currently underway in New York.
Parliament’s statutory recess ended on August 23, when the new session was legally due to open. With the latest adjustment, the work of the legislature has now been delayed for nearly six weeks.
During the 7th session, the House of the People is expected to deliberate on major national issues, including legislation governing the electoral process, amendments to the remaining chapters of the Provisional Constitution, and revisions to sections of Chapter Four previously altered under a political agreement between Villa Somalia and members of the National Salvation Forum.
