MOGADISHU (Dawan) – Somali National University (SNU) launched the Somali National Artificial Intelligence Centre (SNAIC) on Wednesday, a new hub to advance AI research, education, innovation and skills across Somalia, the National Communications Authority said.
The inauguration ceremony brought together representatives from government institutions, universities, research centres, academics, technology experts, and other stakeholders.
SNAIC serves as SNU’s central hub for AI research and innovation, supporting the development of locally driven solutions that contribute to national growth and digital transformation.

The Centre will focus on building national talent, fostering innovation, advising on AI policy, and strengthening responsible AI partnerships. Research areas include machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, robotics, and AI ethics, with practical applications in education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, and economic development.
SNAIC will also provide academic programmes, professional training, research initiatives, and innovation activities aimed at equipping students, researchers, and professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to leverage AI for national development.
