Somalia, 30 December 2025 Somali Member of Parliament Abdirahmaan Abdishakur Warsame has questioned why meetings requested by Somalia with regional and international organizations have failed to materialize, warning that the country could slide into a dangerous phase of political and legal uncertainty.
Speaking at a Heritage Forum, on Tuesday, Abdishakur claimed that the Federal Government of Somalia spent the past two days seeking support against Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, but the requests submitted to various regional organizations received no response.
“We asked the world for patience and support,” he said, noting that Somalia formally approached IGAD, the African Union, the East African Community, and the Arab League, “yet none of those bodies convened the expected meetings,” he said.
He noted that issue was only raised at the UN Security Council, which he described as a forum heavily influenced by powerful countries.
The African Union, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (EAC) have all issued statements, through their executive arms, rejecting Israel's recognition of Somaliland and reaffirmed support for Somalia's unity and territorial integrity.

In his address, Abdishakur questioned why Somalia continues to depend on decisions made by others, arguing that the country lacks sufficient internal capacity to tackle major challenges.
“So far, whenever we ask for something, it is always others who hold the cards,” he said, attributing this to political divisions and a system of governance built on coercion rather than consensus and the public interest.
The legislator warned that the government risks losing its current legal legitimacy if agreement is not reached on the upcoming electoral process.
Abdishakur also warned that if May 15, 2026, passes without elections being held, the mandate of the current government would expire, potentially leaving Somalia in a precarious situation where the international community would struggle to identify a legitimate authority to engage with. He added that such a vacuum could open the door for countries with narrow interests in Somalia to exploit the situation.
