MOGADISHU, October 23 2026 A Somali military court on Thursday sentenced a former police officer to death after finding him guilty of killing a senior police officer who was shot at his home in June, the court said in a statement.
The court found Jamaal Hassan Abdulle guilty of killing Salaad Mohamed Guled, a former head of the police communications and technology command, and sentenced him to death by shooting in retribution (qisas) for the killing.
A second defendant, Mustaf Hussein Guure, known as ‘Kamil’, was sentenced to one year of security supervision. The court’s chairman, Hassan Ali Nur Shuute, explained the sentences to the media.
The court said Abdulle had been Guled’s personal bodyguard, and that Guled had raised him and enrolled him in the police. It said a dispute began over an AK-47 registered to Guled that went missing, which Abdulle had sold.
According to the court, after returning to the house Abdulle shot Guled three times with an AK-47, hitting him in the back and hand. It said he did not come to Guled’s aid and cleaned blood and other traces linked to the crime. The court said CCTV footage showed him discarding a shell casing outside the house.

Guure, an information technology engineer who had been a friend of Guled since 2019 and lived in the same house, was charged with complicity in the killing, concealing a crime and failing to help.
The court said he remained in the house for 12 minutes after the shooting and gave arriving officers misleading information. It also said he used fake identification and military ranks.
The military prosecutor’s office asked for the case to be taken up after a lengthy investigation, and the request was approved on October 19, the court said. The court gave both sides time before issuing its verdict on Thursday, it said.
The case has been widely discussed on social media in recent days, with footage recorded during the hearing.
