Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Over the past three days, the National Consultative Council (NCC) convened in Mogadishu, bringing together President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, Presidents of the Federal Member States, and the Governor of Benadir region. The high-level meeting addressed critical issues affecting Somalia, culminating in a joint statement focused on security, constitutional reform, and humanitarian efforts.
Acknowledging that security is central to state-building and national development, the council agreed to collectively intensify operations against terrorist groups. They expressed strong support for the Federal Government's efforts to assume full security responsibilities following the anticipated withdrawal of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
On the constitutional front, the NCC reaffirmed its commitment to expediting the implementation of previous agreements. They urged the Federal Parliament to accelerate the approval of the remaining constitutional chapters. The council emphasized the need for the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and legislative bodies to fast-track laws and institutions necessary for a one-person-one-vote electoral system, marking a significant step towards democratization.
In light of recent heavy rains and their severe impact on the Somali population, the council assessed the urgent humanitarian needs. Government agencies were directed to expedite aid delivery to those affected, and the Somali public was called upon to provide mutual support. Additionally, the NCC appealed to both international and local organizations to increase their efforts in assisting flood victims. Recognizing the broader implications of climate change, the council highlighted the importance of collaborative work on climate change mitigation and management.
The meeting concluded with a unified resolve to address these pressing issues.
