MOGADISHU, 14 October 2026 — Somali organisations Hayaan Heritage, Biciid and Green Media Initiative have warned that El Niño weather conditions could threaten the country’s historical, cultural and environmental heritage.
In a joint statement, the groups said heavy rainfall, floods and soil erosion could threaten ancient buildings, historical sites, cultural artefacts and rare handwritten manuscripts, as well as people and livestock.
They said the sites and objects hold significant historical and cultural value for Somali society.

The organisations called on the federal government, the public, relevant institutions and international stakeholders to take preventive measures.
The statement said heritage protection measures should be taken before damage occurs.
The groups concluded: “Prevention is better than responding after the damage is done.”
