Somalia, 13 October 2025 — The Federal Government of Somalia has released details about the operation that resulted in the death of Al Shabaab Commander, Ali Ahmed Gure (Ali Qoyane), on Sunday night.
According to a report by Somali National Television (SNTV), Ali Qoyane was targeted while sitting in a local café in the Mabaah (Mahas) area of Hiran region.
The operation was conducted jointly by Macawiisley local defence forces and Somali Security Forces (SSF), resulting in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and a pistol at the scene.
The government previously indicated that Ali Qoyane was involved in Al-Shabaab’s intelligence operations in Beledweyne and had previously planned attacks and bombings targeting officials and civilians. He had survived several previous assassination attempts.
The government statement said: “Last night’s operation demonstrates the courage and ongoing efforts of Macawiisley local defence forces, supported by the federal government, to ensure public security and prevent acts of terrorism.”
Officials emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts by the government and local forces to strengthen security and counter terrorism.
The method of targeting the commander marked a departure from previous operations against senior Al-Shabaab members, which typically involved airstrikes coordinated with international partners.
