Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) voiced strong opposition to Jubaland State's decision to establish an independent electoral and boundaries commission and conduct regional elections.
Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe’s initiative to hold elections was met with resistance from the Ministry of Interior and Federalism, which argues that his efforts undermine political and economic stability in the southern state.
In a detailed statement, the Ministry of Interior emphasized, “Ahmed Madobe’s attempt to hold elections contradicts the outcomes of the National Consultative Council aimed at moving towards direct elections by 2025.”
The FGS further contended that Madobe’s term ended in August 2023, with his continued leadership based solely on political consensus, rather than a mandate.
The Somali government expressed commitment to initiating dialogue with President Madobe, aiming for an urgent resolution to the escalating tensions. Meanwhile, Jubaland proceeded with appointing a committee to oversee the elections, highlighting a deepening rift between the state and federal authorities.
