Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The Somali Federal Government has officially set a timeline for the establishment of SSC-Khatumo State on Sunday, outlining critical steps for its formal recognition. The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation issued the timeline in a letter dated June 29, 2025, addressed to various stakeholders, including the Somali President, the Ministry of Interior, and the leadership of SSC-Khatumo.
The letter, signed by Minister Ali Yusuf Ali, outlines the completion of the state-building process by July 2025. It reaffirms the government’s commitment to supporting the establishment of SSC-Khatumo as an official state within Somalia’s federal framework. "The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation continues to collaborate closely with regional authorities to ensure the smooth integration of SSC-Khatumo into Somalia’s federal system," the letter states.
Additionally, the letter references prior consultations between the Somali government and SSC-Khatumo leadership, including a key meeting held in May 2025. "The letter highlights the government’s visit to SSC-Khatumo on May 6-7, 2025, during which progress was made in discussions concerning state formation," it states.
The communication also outlines forthcoming steps, including a high-level meeting to assess progress, with the goal of finalizing state-building efforts. The Ministry of Interior has instructed that SSC-Khatumo’s state structures be prepared for approval by mid-July 2025.
This announcement marks a significant development for SSC-Khatumo, a region that has long sought political autonomy and development. The formal recognition of SSC-Khatumo as a state is expected to have a lasting impact on Somalia’s political landscape as the country continues its pursuit of federalization.
