Somalia, 31 May 2026 – Somalia’s Data Protection Authority announced the start of registration for government institutions and private companies that collect, process, or transfer personal data.
In an official notice issued on May 31, the Authority said the registration is based on Article 32 of Somalia’s Data Protection Law, Law No. 005 of 2023.
The Authority said all data controllers and data processors operating in Somalia are required to comply with the registration requirement, as part of efforts to strengthen the protection of citizens’ personal information and ensure adherence to the country’s data protection law.

It also said official registration certificates will be issued to institutions and companies that meet the conditions set by the authority.
The move follows the authority’s announcement earlier this month that it launched a registration and oversight system for institutions and companies handling citizens’ data.
Registration comes as digital services, mobile money, national identification and online government services expand in the country.
