MOGADISHU, Somalia, Aug. 14, 2026 – SIMAD University has adopted an Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework to guide responsible use of AI in teaching and learning, research and administration, the university said on Thursday.
The framework was prepared by the SIMAD AI Institute and approved by the University Council, according to the university.
The policy comes as artificial intelligence plays a growing role in higher education and is intended to support improvements in educational quality, research, innovation and institutional efficiency, SIMAD said.
The framework also addresses concerns including academic integrity, data privacy, intellectual property, misinformation, bias and over-reliance on AI systems.
The policy is based on six principles: human-centred AI, Islamic values and ethics, academic integrity, transparency and accountability, equity and privacy, and critical thinking.

SIMAD said the framework emphasises that artificial intelligence should support rather than replace human judgment, creativity and intellectual responsibility.
Under the policy, students and faculty may use AI to support teaching and learning, including explaining concepts, developing learning materials and improving written work.
However, the university prohibits submitting unauthorised AI-generated academic work, using AI in assessments where it is not permitted, fabricating academic content or using AI as a substitute for students' own critical thinking.
The framework also establishes standards for AI use in research and university administration, with an emphasis on human oversight, transparency, research integrity and the protection of confidential and personal data.
SIMAD said the policy forms part of its broader digital transformation efforts and is intended to promote the responsible use of emerging technologies in education, research and institutional development.
