Kenya, 15 November 2025- Several people are feared to have died, and many others were injured early Saturday after a bus and a lorry crashed along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The collision occurred at Kinyambu in Makueni County when a bus traveling from Kisumu toward Mombasa via Nairobi reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. According to eyewitness accounts, the bus veered into the path of an oncoming lorry, resulting in a violent head-on impact.
Emergency responders, including police officers and residents from nearby villages, rushed to the scene to help pull survivors from the wreckage. Rescue efforts continued for hours as some passengers remained trapped inside the mangled bus.
Images and videos widely shared online showed the bus with severe front-end damage, its windscreen shattered, and debris scattered across the road. The crash caused a major traffic jam along the highway as authorities worked to clear the scene and allow vehicles to pass.
The tragedy comes just days before the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) leads the annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. This year’s commemoration, set to take place in Eldoret under the theme “Lost Talents,” aims to honor individuals whose lives were cut short by road accidents.

Speaking to the media on Friday, November 14, NTSA Head of Communication Antony Nyongesa noted that the theme highlights the impact of losing skilled and gifted members of society. NTSA statistics show that between January and October this year, Kenya has recorded 3,890 road deaths, slightly higher than the 3,805 fatalities reported during the same period in the previous year.
The data further reveals that pedestrians account for the highest number of victims, followed by motorcyclists, drivers, and pillion passengers.
