Kenya, 26 December 2025 - Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah has once again found himself at the centre of an online debate after sharing a festive message featuring a Christmas tree, a post that quickly divided opinion across social media platforms.
The image, which did not show Salah himself, has become an almost yearly tradition for the football star.
Yet, as in previous years, it prompted mixed reactions, particularly among sections of his Muslim following who questioned whether such imagery was appropriate for a practising Muslim and one of the most recognisable Muslim athletes in the world.
Some critics argued that sharing symbols linked to Christian celebrations conflicted with Islamic teachings. They said Salah’s global influence meant his actions carried weight, especially among young fans who look to him as a role model. Several comments urged him to be more mindful of his faith and the message they felt he was sending to millions of followers worldwide.
However, the criticism was met by an equally strong wave of support.
Many fans, both Muslim and non-Muslim, defended Salah’s post as a simple gesture of goodwill rather than a religious statement.

Supporters said the message reflected coexistence and respect in an increasingly polarised world, praising the player for using his platform to promote unity.
Others noted that Salah has never claimed to celebrate Christmas as a religious observance, but rather acknowledges the festive season in the spirit of togetherness.
For these fans, the annual post has come to symbolise his broader appeal beyond football — a reminder that public figures can bridge cultural and religious divides without compromising personal beliefs.
The debate unfolded as Salah remains on international duty with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations. On the pitch, the 32-year-old continues to make headlines for different reasons. Earlier this week, he played a decisive role in Egypt’s 2–1 win over Zimbabwe, calmly converting a late penalty to secure victory.
Egypt, the most successful nation in AFCON history with seven titles, are seeking to build momentum as they prepare to face South Africa. Their last continental triumph came in 2010, just before Salah emerged as a regular figure in the national team.
