Kazakhstan, 20 May 2026 - President William Ruto’s latest international recognition in Kazakhstan is being viewed as more than a ceremonial honour, it is emerging as a sign of Kenya’s expanding diplomatic and economic footprint beyond its traditional partners.
President Ruto received the Order of Dostyk, First Degree, Kazakhstan’s highest state honour, during a ceremony hosted by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in the capital, Astana.
The award, whose name translates to “friendship” in Kazakh, is reserved for leaders and public figures who have strengthened cooperation, peace and understanding between nations.
But behind the medals and formalities lies a deeper story: Kenya’s push to build new alliances in Central Asia as it seeks fresh trade routes, technology partnerships and investment opportunities.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Ruto said the recognition reflected the growing friendship between Kenya and Kazakhstan.
“This award is not only a personal recognition but a luminous symbol of the enduring friendship between Kenya and Kazakhstan,” he said.
The President added that he accepted the award on behalf of Kenyans and dedicated it to the relationship between the two countries.
“As I wear this star and sash, I do so with reverence for the values they embody: unity, respect, and solidarity,” Ruto stated.
The State Visit also produced a series of agreements expected to shape future cooperation between Nairobi and Astana.
