June 01, 2026 - President William Ruto has officially opened the new Accident and Emergency Wing at Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital, marking a major boost to the government's efforts to strengthen healthcare services in Northern Kenya.
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance emergency and critical care services, providing residents of Wajir and neighbouring counties with access to advanced medical treatment closer to home.
The newly commissioned wing features a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), modern orthopaedic, laparoscopic and general surgery theatres, as well as an ultra-modern medical ward equipped with centralised oxygen, compressed air and vacuum systems.
Speaking during the launch, President Ruto said the Government remains committed to investing in quality healthcare infrastructure to ensure all Kenyans have access to affordable and specialised medical services.
"This facility reflects our commitment to improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of where they live, can access quality medical care. We are investing in modern health infrastructure to save lives and improve the well-being of our people," said President Ruto.
The Head of State noted that the new facility will strengthen emergency response services, reduce referrals to hospitals outside the region, and improve treatment outcomes for patients requiring specialised care.

"With the opening of this Accident and Emergency Wing, residents of Wajir and the wider Northern Kenya region will benefit from improved critical care services, advanced surgical procedures and better-equipped medical wards," he added.
President Ruto reaffirmed the government's commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage through continued investment in healthcare facilities, medical equipment and health personnel across the country.
The Accident and Emergency Wing is expected to significantly boost the capacity of Wajir County Teaching and Referral Hospital and serve thousands of patients annually from Wajir and neighbouring counties.
