Tanzania, 7 September 2026 - Kenyan President William Ruto on Monday send condolences to his Tanzanian counterpart Mama Samia Suluhu Hassan following the demise of her beloved husband and First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan which occurred at 8am at Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
President Ruto also extended condolences to all Tanzanians as the country mourns the man who has stood with Samia Hassan as she leads the populous East African nation.
In a statement on social media platform X, Dr Ruto said he received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania.
"On behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, the First Lady, my family and on my own behalf, I convey our heartfelt condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania," President Ruto stated.
The Kenyan Head of State said the loss is heavy for President Samia who has lost a lifelong companion and her children losing a beloved father, and that Tanzania has lost a distinguished son.
"Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief. May Almighty God comfort President Samia and her family, give them strength through this difficult time, and grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest."
The news of Ameir's death was announced by the newly inaugurated Vice President Deogratius John Ndejembi, who was sworn in to replace Emmanuel Nchimbi who resigned in August after fallout with President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

"Dear Citizens of Tanzania, it is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband to Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of United Republic of Tanzania which occurred today (Monday) at around 8am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar where he was receiving treatment on heart condition," Ndejembi announced.
He further added that burial arrangements were underway at Kizimkazi in the Zanzibar archipelago.
"I extend my condolences to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, family, friends and Tanzanians," the second in command said.
Ameir has died aged 76.
