Bosaso, 2 September 2026 Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has ordered security agencies to seize illegal weapons and take legal action against people involved in clan violence, as the federal state seeks to strengthen security in the strategic Bari region.
Deni chaired a security meeting attended by government and parliamentary officials, military commanders, and representatives from Bari region and the port city of Bosaso, the Puntland presidency said in a statement on Tuesday.
The meeting ordered authorities to enforce a ban on carrying illegal weapons in Puntland's cities and take legal action against anyone involved in the importation, sale or use of unauthorized weapons, the statement said.
Authorities were also ordered to act against people involved in organising or fuelling clan conflicts.
Puntland said it would accelerate operations against militant groups across its territory and ordered security agencies to prevent the import, sale and use of drugs and alcohol.
The administration also tightened controls on vehicles that could be used to transport weapons or military equipment. Such vehicles will require approval from the military command and the president before entering Puntland, according to the statement.
Security agencies were authorised to seize military vehicles entering the territory illegally.
Piracy and human trafficking
The meeting also called for stronger maritime security and protection of Puntland's coastline, ordering security agencies to implement measures against piracy and human trafficking.
The measures come as Somalia continues to face security threats from militant groups and other armed actors, while piracy and trafficking remain concerns along parts of its coastline.

Trade and investment
The meeting also focused on boosting government revenue, particularly from coastal areas and ports.
Puntland plans to hold a trade and investment conference to encourage domestic and foreign investment, the statement said.
Authorities will also activate a quality-control agency and take legal action against traders selling substandard consumer products.
Bosaso development
The administration approved plans to clear blocked roads and improve the appearance of Bosaso in line with the city's master plan.
It also banned new settlements that do not comply with Puntland's laws and development plans.
Authorities were instructed to take legal action against anyone who has illegally occupied grazing land or established settlements without the required approval.
The Puntland presidency said relevant agencies should move quickly to implement the decisions adopted at the meeting.
