Austria, August 12, 2026 - The 2026/27 European football season begins with a mouthwatering clash in Salzburg as Paris Saint-Germain face Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, August 12.
The encounter brings together the winners of Europe's two major club competitions from last season, with Champions League holders PSG taking on Europa League champions Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena.
For Unai Emery and Aston Villa, the match represents more than an opportunity to win another trophy. It is the first major test of a new-look squad following one of the most successful seasons in the club's modern history.
Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 CET at Stadion Salzburg, with the match going directly to penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes. There will be no extra time.
Villa arrive as European champions#
Aston Villa enter the Super Cup full of confidence after completing a remarkable Europa League campaign last season.
Emery's side were dominant throughout the competition, winning seven of their eight league-phase matches before eliminating Lille, Bologna and Nottingham Forest in the knockout rounds.
They completed their European journey with a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the final, ending a 30-year wait for a major trophy and securing Villa's first European silverware since their 1982 European Cup triumph.
The achievement was another milestone in Emery's transformation of the club.
Villa also finished fourth in the Premier League, securing Champions League football for the second time under the Spanish manager.
Now Emery wants his team to prove that the success in Istanbul was not a one-off.
"We're trying to be successful through, firstly, building a winning team, and then aiming for the positive consequences after it: winning trophies," Emery said ahead of the match. "To play the UEFA Super Cup is another opportunity to be there, the opportunity to win a trophy."
However, Villa face PSG at a time of considerable change.
Several important members of last season's team have departed. Morgan Rogers completed a reported £117 million move to Chelsea, while Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United for a reported £35 million. Amadou Onana is also unavailable because of injury.
The club have responded by recruiting João Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers, centre-back Modou Kéba Cissé from LASK and bringing Alejandro Garnacho in on loan from Chelsea.
The summer overhaul means Emery has to integrate new players while maintaining the tactical identity that made Villa so successful last season.
That makes PSG an extremely difficult opponent for the opening competitive fixture.
PSG are European champions for a reason#
If Villa want a statement victory, they will have to overcome a PSG side that has become the dominant force in European football.
Luis Enrique's team won the Champions League last season, defeating Arsenal on penalties in the final after an extraordinary campaign.
PSG's route to the final included an 8-2 aggregate demolition of Chelsea, a 4-0 quarter-final victory over Liverpool and a dramatic 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. They eventually defeated Arsenal 1-1, 4-3 on penalties in Budapest to claim their second Champions League title.
PSG also won last year's Super Cup after defeating Tottenham on penalties and now have the opportunity to become only the second team in the modern era to retain the trophy after Real Madrid achieved the feat in 2016 and 2017.
The French champions have also retained much of their core squad, giving Enrique an advantage over Emery in terms of continuity.
Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué, Vitinha and João Neves remain among the key figures in a team that has developed tremendous chemistry.
PSG have also added Monaco attacking midfielder Maghnes Akliouche, further strengthening an already deep squad.

A rematch with history#
There is an additional layer to Wednesday's encounter.
PSG and Aston Villa already know each other well from their Champions League quarter-final meeting in 2025.
PSG won that tie 5-4 on aggregate, but Villa came agonisingly close to completing a remarkable comeback in the second leg.
After PSG established a 5-1 aggregate advantage, Villa produced a stunning response at Villa Park. Goals from Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Ezri Konsa gave Emery's team a 3-2 victory on the night, but PSG survived and eventually went on to win the Champions League.
That experience should give Villa belief that PSG can be challenged.
The difference this time is that PSG are even more experienced, while Villa have undergone significant changes.
Team news and predicted line-ups#
Villa could be without several important players.
Emiliano Martínez, Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa are among those whose availability has been affected by their involvement in the 2026 World Cup, while Amadou Onana and Johan Manzambi are unavailable through injury.
John McGinn has returned to training after a knee issue but remains a fitness concern.
PSG also have some fitness doubts, including Dembélé, Doué, Bradley Barcola, Fabián Ruiz, Achraf Hakimi and Lucas Hernández.
The official line-ups will only be confirmed one hour before kick-off.
The key battle#
The biggest question will be whether Villa can withstand PSG's pressure.
Enrique's team are comfortable dominating possession and creating numerical advantages around the ball, while their attacking players possess the individual quality to punish even small defensive mistakes.
Villa, meanwhile, will likely look to exploit transitions.
Emery's team have the pace and directness to hurt PSG when space opens up, particularly through the wide areas.
Garnacho could be an important weapon if selected, while Buendía's creativity could prove crucial in finding Abraham in dangerous positions.
The midfield battle will also be fascinating.
PSG's Vitinha and João Neves offer control, energy and technical quality, while Villa will need João Gomes and Kamara to disrupt PSG's rhythm and prevent Enrique's side from dictating the match.
