21 April 2026 - Protesters camped at Garissa police station on Tuesday morning with a body of a young man allegedly killed by police.
Relatives claimed Aden Mohamed Omani, a taxi was shot dead by police in Modika around 2am when he allegedly went to rescue his friend whose car had developed a mechanical problem.
Protesters demanded justice, asking the investigating authority to speedily probe the incident and arrest officers involved.
Protesters marched through Garissa town with the body of the deceased and camped at Garissa police station vowing to stay until the culprit is arrested.
There was heavy police presence at the gate with officers in full combat gear and armed with teargas canisters.
"We are demanding justice, Aden is someone I have grew up with, went to same duksi and school, I'm pained by his death," said Abdirizack Noor.
He said it has been a trend by police to kill innocent residents instead of protecting them and nothing is done to reverse the situation.
Noor said the deceased has left behind an expectant wife having lost his first child during child birth.
"This is a tragedy we are asking the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to immediately intervene and ensure that the culprit is arrested and prosecuted," he added.
Garissa-based activists have also condemned the alleged killing of an innocent man by the police saying many investigations regarding police brutality in the past went silent with no one brought to book.
"We don't want this case to be like many other cases of police extra judicial killings that have gone unresolved. We are demanding immediate arrest of the officers involved," said Muktar Osman of Garissa Human Rights Network.
The activist also demanded the disbandment of the whole Garissa county security committee saying they have failed to protect residents.
Tension remain high in Garissa with angry youths pelting stones to motorist and onlookers.
There were unconfirmed reports that shops along Kismayu road were looted by goons who took advantage of protests.
Until the time of publishing this story, there was no official report from the police.
