Somalia, 29 December 2025 While a hoisted Israeli flag fluttered in Somaliland’s administrative capital, Hargeisa, in the town of Borama, Awdal region, a different scene unfolded on Sunday as hundreds of protesters took to the streets, waving Palestinian flags and holding placards with anti-Israel messages.
Majority of the protesters who were youth expressed their strong opposition to the Israeli Prime Minister's decision to recognize Somaliland, a move that was warmly welcomed by the Hargeisa administration, which declared two days of celebrations to mark the diplomatic achievement.
The protests clearly expressed Borama residents opposition to the Israel-Somaliland deal, a scene the Hargeisa administration would have preferred not to take place.

There is fear that the protests might spread to other parts of the region providing a major challenge to administration officials who had described the Israeli recognition as a major victory for the people of Somaliland.
The protests come at a time when opposition to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is intensifying, with strong disapproval being expressed both locally and internationally
