MOGADISHU, 14 August 2026 — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is scheduled to travel to Dusamareb on Friday to attend celebrations marking the anniversary of Galmudug state, sources familiar with the plans said.
The president will join federal and Galmudug officials for events in the regional capital to mark 14 August, the date Galmudug was established as a federal member state in 2015. The state comprises the Galgaduud region and much of the Mudug region.
The anniversary comes shortly after Galmudug held elections for local councils and the regional parliament using a one-person, one-vote system.

The Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) emerged as the largest political organization, winning the most votes and seats in the regional parliament, according to provisional results.
The vote is part of Somalia’s broader push to expand direct elections and move away from the indirect electoral model used in previous cycles.
The president’s visit is expected to focus on federal-state cooperation and the government’s continued efforts to strengthen political participation and the electoral system nationwide.
