Dhusamareb, 15 August 2026 — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Friday that Somalia’s ongoing electoral process is “better and more beautiful” than many elections held in other African countries, despite the country’s history of state collapse and civil conflict.
Speaking at an event marking the 11th anniversary of Galmudug state, the president said Somalia had learned from past elections that were conducted amid challenges and conflict.
“The election currently taking place in Somalia is, in reality, much better and more beautiful than elections in many African countries where there has been no state collapse or civil war,” Hassan Sheikh said.

He noted that Somalia previously held indirect elections under difficult circumstances, but has now entered a new and important stage in its political development.
The president expressed hope that the remaining stages of the process, including elections to the two houses of the Federal Parliament, would be completed peacefully.
“We hope that what remains, including the national election for the two houses of the federal parliament, will, God willing, conclude in peace,” he said.
