Hargeysa(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Breakaway Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, inaugurated a $50 million storage tank construction project in the port town of Berbera yesterday on Monday.
This project, aimed at facilitating the national pipeline, is financed by Trafigura Company, known for deploying infrastructural development, logistics, and financing projects. A delegation from Trafigura arrived in Hargeisa to oversee the project’s initial phase.
Ahmed Ibrahim Abdi, the Managing Director of Somaliland National Oil, underscored the project’s importance for the government and people, highlighting its potential to enhance petroleum product supply security, operational flexibility, and the economy.
“This project marks a crucial win for the government of Somaliland and its citizens. It lays the groundwork for a lasting partnership between Somaliland and Trafigura Company. The addition of this new tank will ensure the security and easy supply of petroleum products, enhancing operational adaptability and also promoting our economy,” stated Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim.
Mr. Hadi Hallouche, Trafigura Company’s Director, affirmed their commitment to completing the project and the importance of these tanks in fuel storage.
“Trafigura plans to invest $50 million over the next 3-5 years, viewing this as the initial step toward more future investments. We believe in Somaliland’s economy, its potential, and its capability to become a regional trade hub,” stated Mr. Hallouche.
President Muse Bihi Abdi expressed gratitude to Trafigura Company and extended an invitation for other industries and organizations to invest in Somaliland. He affirmed the government’s dedication to provide security, collaboration, and partnership to Trafigura.
“I assure that Somaliland is committed to security, collaboration, and a cooperative relationship with Trafigura in our pursuit of progress and development,” said President Bihi.
He also discussed ongoing conflicts, particularly in Las’Anod and Ga’an-Libah. Bihi acknowledged the government’s attempts to engage armed groups through dialogue but highlighted the planned nature of these conflicts by those opposing the nation’s progress.
“Somaliland is currently peaceful, but challenges and conflicts persist, especially in Las’anod and Ga’an-Libah. While we aim for negotiations, certain individuals incite these conflicts, opposing our social, political, and economic progress,” Bihi remarked.
He issued a warning to anti-government armed groups in Ga’an-Libah and those involved in Las’Anod conflicts, stating that the government will defend itself from the armed groups.
The President emphasized the importance of resolving differences through peaceful dialogue, patience, adherence to the rule of law, and unity.
