23 December 2025 - Police in Garissa have on Tuesday denied that they were involved in the killing of 25-year-old taxi driver, maintaining that he died in a traffic accident.
Addressing journalists in his office, Garissa County Police Commander Amos Ambasa gave a detailed account of how the young man, Ahmed Shiekh Omar, lost his life, a sharp difference with family members and local leaders who claimed he died over gunshot wounds by the Rapid Deployment Unit stationed at Modika.
Ambasa said at midnight on Sunday, the vehicle the deceased was driving upon noticing the officers made a sharp U-turn and officers made a chase to determine in a bid to see the occupants.
“After like 150 metres, they found that the vehicle was involved in self-traffic accident where the driver was fatally injured. They found two boys about 15 years old, who were interrogated,” he said.
The police boss said after the accident, traffic police officers were involved and they responded and visited the scene of the accident before removing the body to Garissa Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
The county police commander said the vehicle which was towed to Garissa police station was loaded with clothing materials that they suspect might have been shipped from neighbouring Somalia.

Ambasa, while acknowledging the claims of the family members and local leaders over alleged shooting of the deceased, noted that they have involved the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to determine what killed the taxi driver.
“We have gotten the help of a government pathologist who will do an independent post-mortem which will lead us to know the exact cause of death of the young man,” said the police commander.
On Monday, leaders including Garissa Township Member of Parliament Dekow Mohamed, former Lagdera MP Mohamed Hire, and former Garissa Woman Representative Shukran Gure demanded immediate arrest and prosecution of officers involved.
They denied claims that police recorded the death as accident, alleging that there were clear gunshot wounds on his head.
