Somalia, 23 September 2025 – A faction of the opposition group, The National Salvation Forum of Somalia, has announced plans to file lawsuits against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and government in domestic and international courts, over human rights violations.
In a press statement issued after a meeting held on Monday in Mogadishu, the group said it is actively working to bring the President and his government before courts in Somalia and abroad, describing the alleged abuses as serious offenses that warrant justice, potentially leading to President Mohamud's prosecution.
“The National Salvation Forum, which includes opposition parliamentarians, political figures, and civil society organizations, is working to file legal cases in domestic and international courts to address serious crimes and human rights violations allegedly committed by the President and officials known for such abuses,” the statement said.
The Forum also called on the public to organize protests both domestically and internationally, without specifying the reasons for these demonstrations, noting that peaceful protest is a legal right and a form of personal defence. The statement also did not detail the alleged rights violations.
The announcement comes after some members of the forum reached an agreement with the Presidency on the framework for the upcoming elections. However, the faction that met yesterday, remain critical of President Mohamud and his administration.
