United States, May 15, 2026 - OpenAI has integrated its developer agent system, Codex, into the ChatGPT mobile app, which will allow users to monitor ongoing coding tasks even when they are away from their laptops.
In a statement, the tech company said that users will now have the opportunity to actively monitor their work running on their laptops, cloud-based devboxes, or remote machines directly through the ChatGPT mobile app.
According to the company, the app connects securely to machines where Codex is running, including your laptop, a dedicated Mac mini, or a managed remote environment, and mirrors live activity such as terminal outputs, test results, code diffs, and screenshots.
Users can also switch models, review changes, or initiate new tasks, while sensitive files and credentials remain on the original machine.
OpenAI has assured that the system relies on a secure relay layer, which keeps devices connected without exposing them to the public internet.
“More than 4 million people now use Codex every week, and we’re seeing how much those small moments matter. A quick check-in can keep a thread moving, prevent unnecessary rework, or help Codex make progress with the right context. Now you can do that from your phone,” OpenAI stated.
“As Codex handles work over longer stretches, timely guidance becomes a bigger part of keeping that work useful. From your phone, you can start work when it is top of mind, unblock it when your judgment is needed, and stay close to the result as it takes shape,” it added.
OpenAI has also noted expanded capabilities on Codex at the enterprise level, including direct connections to managed remote environments using Remote SSH, enabling teams to run Codex inside approved corporate systems.
The company has also revealed plans to release several updates, including programmatic access tokens for automation workflows, new “hooks” for Codex behaviour, and support for HIPAA-compliant use in regulated environments when run locally.
The Codex mobile is currently rolling out in preview on iOS and Android across all ChatGPT plans, with enterprise features being available depending on subscription level.
