USA, July 10 ,2026 - OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Work, a new agent that is engineered to help users complete complex tasks by working across connected apps, documents, and workflows, marking a major expansion of ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into a productivity platform.
The new feature, which GPT-5.6 powers, can independently gather information, analyse data, and create finished materials such as spreadsheets, presentations, documents, and web applications.
According to the tech giant, ChatGPT Work builds on the capabilities of Codex, its AI coding agent, which is now used by more than five million people every week.
OpenAI said that users can assign ChatGPT Work end-to-end workflows with a single prompt. For instance, it can turn customer research into a marketing campaign brief, generate marketing assets from that brief and adapt them for different markets while maintaining context throughout the process.
ChatGPT Work begins rolling out today on web and mobile for Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers, with Plus and Business users gaining access over the coming days.
“To better manage these tasks, ChatGPT Work is powered by our latest frontier model, GPT 5.6, which is also rolling out today. GPT 5.6 makes ChatGPT state of the art at reasoning through multi-step tasks and creating materials that follow your templates and reference files,” the company stated.
“The best way to learn how to use ChatGPT Work is to give it a task you already know well: analyze a month-end budget variance, turn source materials into a marketing campaign brief, or prepare for a sales meeting,” it added.
The company has also introduced Scheduled Tasks, which will enable ChatGPT Work to continue working even when users are away from their devices.
The feature can review new Slack or Microsoft Teams messages, monitor websites and dashboards for updates, summarize customer feedback, refresh presentations and generate recurring reports based on predefined schedules or events.
The new agent integrates with workplace tools through plugins, allowing users to connect services such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendar, customer relationship management systems, as well as project management platforms.
The company has also announced Sites, which is a public beta feature that enables users to turn documents, projects, or ideas into interactive websites or web applications that can be shared internally or publicly through a URL, which can be used to build dashboards, project trackers, prototypes, internal portals, and interactive reports, with ChatGPT.
Other notable changes include an upgrade of the desktop version of ChatGPT, which now includes a built-in browser. The company is also merging the standalone Codex application into the new ChatGPT desktop app.
OpenAI also noted that ChatGPT Work includes security and governance controls built on ChatGPT Enterprise. Administrators can manage permissions, connected tools, browser access, spending limits, and compliance oversight, while an automated review system checks sensitive actions before they are carried out.
