U.S., 23 July 2026 - OpenAI has announced it has committed a total of $7 million (approximately KSh 906 million) in various commitments as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Genesis Mission aimed at accelerating scientific research and innovation through Artificial Intelligence.
The company said on Wednesday that it will provide $4 million in Codex access to approximately 2,000 Genesis researchers from National Laboratories and universities. This is aimed at helping them to integrate advanced coding and reasoning capabilities into their day-to-day scientific work.
The company is also set to provide $3 million in API that will support two large-scale scientific campaigns that will test frontier AI models during major scientific challenges.
Furthermore, the company said that all participating researchers will be eligible to receive up to $10 million in API usage for every $2.5 million spent, allowing them to expand AI-powered research.
Selected researchers working on eligible biology projects will also gain access to GPT-Rosalind, OpenAI's specialized bioscience model, while trusted leaders at National Laboratories will receive early access to selected AI models and features to prepare research infrastructure.
“These commitments build on our work across the national-laboratory system. In an AI Jam Session with nine National Laboratories, more than 1,000 scientists tested frontier models on domain-specific problems and provided structured feedback,” the company stated.
“We also deployed advanced reasoning models on Venado, the supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as a shared resource across the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories. This work explores how frontier reasoning can support complex research alongside high-performance computing,” it added.
The DOE's Genesis Mission is an initiative involving the department's 17 National Laboratories, universities, and industry partners that seeks to combine AI with federal scientific data, advanced computing, experimental facilities, and expert teams to double the productivity and impact of American research.
Among the first scientific campaigns under the initiative are efforts to discover high-temperature superconductors that could transform energy, transportation, medicine, and national security, as well as the creation of an "Atlas of the Machine-Accessible Frontier" to identify scientific problems that AI can help in resolving.
The tech giant has also said that it has partnered with Los Alamos National Laboratory to develop safety evaluations for multimodal AI systems in bioscience, which will enable researchers to comprehend the pros and cons of deploying more capable AI models in laboratory environments.
