Kenya, July 17, 2026 - Newly elected Ol Kalou MP Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru has promised to serve residents faithfully after securing a commanding victory in the constituency's parliamentary by-election, saying the overwhelming mandate places a responsibility on him to deliver.
Speaking shortly after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared him the winner, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate described the outcome as a victory of faith, perseverance and the will of the people.
Kamau won the seat with 35,440 votes, defeating UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who garnered about 5,450 votes, handing DCP its first parliamentary seat since the party's formation.
Thanking supporters, Kamau said his victory was possible because of God's grace.
"I wish to thank God for this moment because without Him, I wouldn't be standing here. I am here because God made it possible for me to become the Member of Parliament against all odds," he said.
He also paid tribute to his wife and family, describing them as his greatest source of strength throughout the campaign.
"They stood with me even when things didn't look good. Family always comes first because, when times are tough, you always have a place to run to."
The MP-elect pledged to justify the confidence voters had placed in him, saying the landslide victory would inspire him to work harder for the constituency.
"This is a resounding win. Those 35,000 votes are the faith the people have put in me. I cannot fail them. I will work for them diligently."
Kamau also thanked DCP leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, crediting him with leading the party to its first parliamentary victory and describing the result as a significant political milestone.

"The rejected stone became the cornerstone," he said in reference to Gachagua.
He further claimed that despite alleged intimidation during the campaign period, Ol Kalou residents remained determined to vote for their preferred candidate.
"The people of Ol Kalou... withstood all that and declared that their person of choice is Douglas Kamau."
Kamau concluded by asking for wisdom to serve the people effectively.
"I will serve you diligently to the best of my ability. My prayer has always been that God should not only give me this seat but also give me the wisdom to serve you in the best way possible."
The Ol Kalou by-election attracted intense political attention, with both the ruling UDA and the opposition treating it as a key contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kamau's landslide victory is expected to strengthen DCP's foothold in the Mt Kenya region while intensifying political competition as parties begin positioning themselves for the next national polls.
