20 January 2026 - The national government, in partnership with the County Government of Wajir, has distributed 45,000 bags of food supplies comprising rice, beans, and maize to drought-affected communities across the county.
The food distribution exercise at Wajir town was on Tuesday graced by the Principal Secretary for National Government Coordination, Mr Ahmed Abdisalan, Principal Secretary for Special Programmes Ismail Madey, and Wajir County Commissioner Karuku J. Ngumo. Also present were representatives from the County Government of Wajir, and area Member of Parliament.
Wajir town is in Wajir East consituency. Area MP Adan Daud thanked the government for the relief food.
"We should first ensure that expectant mothers and orphans within Wajir receive the food supplies. We want to reach to all the people who deserve assistance, but we start with the most vulnerable," Mr Daud said.
He said that though distribution started in Wajir town within his Wajir East Constituency, all the six constituencies within Wajir County will be served. Five other constituencies are Eldas, Tarbaj, Wajir North, Wajir South, and Wajir West.
According to data from the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), more than 300,000 people have been affected by the drought, with over 200,000 classified as food insecure.
The intervention comes at a time when Wajir County is grappling with a devastating drought following poor and short rainfall seasons.
In response, the county government is also undertaking water trucking in areas experiencing severe weather conditions.

He emphasised the need for timely interventions to prevent loss of human lives.
Residents welcomed the initiative, noting that it brings much-needed hope, with assurances that more support efforts are expected in the coming days.
