Thousands of mourners defy barriers and security controls in an emotional attempt to view the late Raila Odinga’s body as it arrives at Parliament.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed outside Parliament Buildings in Nairobi on Thursday morning as thousands of mourners attempted to force their way into the compound to view the body of the late former Prime Minister, Raila Amollo Odinga. The emotionally charged crowd, which had gathered along Parliament Road and City Hall Way, turned unruly as they awaited the arrival of the veteran politician’s body for public viewing.
The situation escalated mid-morning when supporters breached the razor-wire barriers that had been erected to maintain order. Many attempted to climb over the gates, waving branches and flags, while others chanted liberation songs and wailed uncontrollably. Some were seen pushing and shaking the main gates of Parliament in a desperate effort to gain access to the grounds.
Security officers stationed at the scene struggled to contain the surging crowd as thousands pressed forward, determined to enter the compound. Several supporters climbed onto the gates and walls, calling for the gates to be opened so they could pay their last respects to the man they fondly referred to as “The People’s President.”
The tension prompted swift intervention from a section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders who were present. ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, and Narok Senator Ledama Olekina addressed the mourners, urging them to remain calm and allow for an orderly process. Their appeals helped ease the situation, restoring calm after nearly an hour of confusion and confrontation.
The emotional outburst reflected the depth of grief among Raila Odinga’s supporters, many of whom had travelled from across the country to honour his memory. For decades, Odinga was a central figure in Kenya’s political landscape, revered for his unwavering fight for democracy and justice.
Authorities later urged members of the public to follow official guidance during the mourning period to ensure safety and allow everyone an opportunity to pay their respects peacefully. Despite the morning’s chaos, order was eventually restored, paving the way for the solemn ceremonies planned in honour of one of Kenya’s most influential and beloved leaders.
